Safety

Drowning is the second greatest cause of accidental death in industrialised countries. More than 50% of cases occur close to the water’s edge.

No method of infant swimming can guarantee to safeguard against drowning but your baby has a better chance of survival if familiarity with water allows her to stay relaxed in case of accidental fall.

Once your baby can swim back to the edge after jumping into the pool, in principal she has become water-safe, but it will take a few more months to consolidate her safety skills. You need to remain watchful.

Swimming toddlers are often at risk from becoming over confidant. During the transition period when infants start to swim unaided but cannot quite surface to breathe, extra caution is needed at all times.
